Structural Engineer - Catastrophe Risk Modeling

Seismic Hazard and Risk Analysis

Andrea Amati is a disaster risk analyst at RED. He holds an M.Eng degree in Building Engineering from the University of Pavia and an MSc degree in Risk and Emergency Management (REM) from the School of Advanced Study in Pavia, Italy. He joined RED in 2015, assessing innovative disaster risk transfer tools, as final research project of the REM master programme. He was later involved in the development of Excess Rainfall (XSR) Loss Model for Central America and the Caribbean and the associated near-real time XSR parametric insurance product for CCRIF - Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility. He mainly contributed in the management and exploration of large datasets and the definition of the vulnerability module, based on historical rainfall-induced regional losses of the countries included in the project. He is currently involved in the monitoring activities related to the Earthquake, Tropical Cyclone and XSR models for CCRIF. He contributed in the development of proposals such as the flood risk model for Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar for The World Bank group. Finally he has collaborated with the World Bank Earthquake Risk Profiles for Sub-Saharan Africa project, in the exposure data processing, risk computations and final results processing for Cape Verde, Malawi and Mozambique.

Andrea is keen on risk modelling, disaster risk assessment, data collection and processing. His current work is mainly focused on data collection and analysis, processing of impacts and risk analysis results. He is interested in tools for the risk assessments and estimation of damage to the building stock caused by severe natural hazards, especially for what concerns the development of exposure databases. He is also investigating the factors influencing the exposure, usually linked to skewed development processes, such as rapid demographic changes, no adaptive planning and urbanization in hazardous areas.
